Be an Inspiration to Others in 2020!

As 2019 winds down, I can’t help but to be super excited about what I can accomplish in 2020! At the end of every year I tell myself that the next year is going to be my best ever!

In late November and December, I spend time reflecting on the year, setting goals, and strategizing for the upcoming year in order to maximize my business. I also put thought into how I am going to uplift others such as my church, friends, and family.

I don’t know about you, but I find great joy in lifting people up and making them happy. You can make life so fulfilling when you do random acts of kindness, such as opening the door for someone, giving someone a compliment, or letting someone ahead of you at the grocery store. You get the idea.

Here are a few things that I am choosing to incorporate in 2020 to help myself and to add value to others.

I always preach that you need to greet your customers with a smile, and I am going to take that to a new level. I’m going to smile at everyone I see.

Not only does smiling make you feel better, I guarantee that your smile will brighten someone else’s day! Smiling at others takes very little effort and can help you maintain a positive frame of mind. Studies have shown that smiling actually helps reduce the body’s response to stress and can lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health.

Studies have also shown that when someone sees you smile at them, they feel rewarded, and will actually mimic and smile back in return.  Smiling is universal and is recognized throughout all cultures.

This is one of my favorite things to do. When a customer drives up in a nice car, I always compliment them on it. Or if someone is wearing a nice watch, or pair of shoes, I make it a point to let them know.

Complimenting people is one of the best ways to start a conversation and begin building rapport with them.  It makes people feel special and important. Mark Twain said, “I could live for two months on one good compliment.” I know that I really like when someone compliments me, and I’m sure that you do as well.

It takes very few words to make people feel valued and important.

When you are enthusiastic and upbeat, it not only improves your state of mind, it can lift others spirits as well.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Man, was he right! Anything big that I have ever accomplished has been attributed to my enthusiasm. When I greet my customers with enthusiasm, they always seem to respond in a positive way.

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t go overboard and be bouncing off the walls or you just might scare folks off! Instead, use what I call genuine enthusiasm in order to set the tone of the conversation. Nobody likes to be around hum-drum, negative, diaper-division people. The key is to make it authentic and heartfelt. That is what resonates with people and it will radiate off of you.

One of the key lessons that I’ve learned during my 24-year journey in the shed business is that it’s not about me, it’s about my customers.

As 2019 comes to a close, I encourage you to be a beacon of light that adds value to others. The best parts about the suggestions above are that they are both rewarding and free! Let’s all make 2020 really count.
