Ray Croc, who owned McDonald’s, said that the two most important requirements for success are, first, being in the right place at the right time, and second, doing something about it.
After attending the Shed Builder Expo in September, I was blown away by just how far the shed industry has grown over my 26 years in the business!
When I began my journey in the shed industry, I never imagined a day when there would be a Shed Builder Expo, Shed Builder Magazine, and the Shed Geek Podcast just to name a few. I never would’ve dreamed that RTO companies would provide no credit check financing for my customers (which in my humble opinion has become the life-blood of the shed industry).
Let me tell you, shed nation, we are in the right place at the right time, with the best tools and resources to succeed more than ever before!
Let’s not forget that Ray also said that we have to do something about it; we must take action now and keep moving forward!
Momentum is full speed ahead, and I am so proud and blessed to be a small part of this industry. I was humbled and honored when I was asked to do a presentation on the “10 Core Commitments for Success in the Shed Industry” at the Shed Builder Expo this year.
Once again, I was astonished at the turnout and participation of the awesome folks who attended. Thanks to all of you from the bottom of my heart for the support and camaraderie and the chance to discuss the industry that we all love and share a passion for.
And to think I almost took myself out of the game!
About five years into my career, I was starting to doubt the shed business. I was watching a few of my friends climb the corporate ladder in their jobs and they seemed really happy.
One hot day in July, I was sitting in a Walmart parking lot doing a charitable sales event where we would set up three to four shed displays for a 10-day show. Sales were slow and it was hotter than a firecracker, and I made up my mind that if sales didn’t drastically improve, I was going to throw in the towel and walk away from the business.
Thank the Lord above, sales did pick up and things started to fall into place and I kept building my shed business. I found a way to overcome my “stinking thinking” and stay focused on the future. I encourage you to never let anybody or your current circumstances steal your dreams!
I never really knew what the future of the shed industry was going to look like, but I am so thankful that I stayed around long enough to see it grow into an exciting and respected industry.
It has completely surpassed my expectations and it continues to do so!
Please remember that whether you are in sales, or a builder, delivery driver, materials supplier, RTO company, etc., we are all on the same team and in this together.
I hope that the excitement felt at this year’s Shed Builder Expo will translate into huge momentum for everyone. I’m already excited about next year’s Shed Builder Expo, and I hope you are too.
We are absolutely in the right industry at the right time, so let’s all make the most of it!
