A Conversation with NSRA’s New Director of Operations

The National Shed Rental Association (NSRA) is entering a new chapter, marked by growth, connection, and a renewed commitment to its members.

At the center of this evolution is Justin Russell, the association’s new director of operations, who brings fresh energy and a sharp focus on customer service. We sat down with Justin to learn more about his journey, his vision for the NSRA, and the values driving his work.

A PATH INTO OPERATIONS

Justin’s career began in government affairs, but a turn of events led him to serve as the interim executive director for a small membership association. That experience gave him an inside look at the operations of a nonprofit and introduced him to working closely with a volunteer board of directors—skills that translate directly to his role at NSRA.

“I initially had no idea the shed industry was such a thriving space,” Justin admits. “But the more I learned, the more excited I became to explore this community and its opportunities.”

DEFINING THE ROLE

As director of operations, Justin is now the go-to contact for members. Whether it’s answering questions, coordinating events, or supporting committees, he is committed to being a reliable connection point. Day to day, his responsibilities include managing the new membership program, ensuring smooth communication, and laying the groundwork for a successful annual conference.

“This role is about making sure members have a consistent, responsive place to go for support,” Justin says. “Our members should feel they are part of something bigger than just an association—they should feel part of a community.”

KEY INITIATIVES

One of Justin’s immediate priorities is growing NSRA’s first-ever membership program, launched in July. With the help of the membership committee, the program is designed to deliver tangible value for shed industry stakeholders. Justin sees his role as shepherding its growth through marketing, customer service, and continuous improvement.

Another major project is the NSRA Annual Conference, scheduled for September in Knoxville. While his involvement this year is limited as he settles into the role, Justin expects to take on a bigger leadership role for the 2026 event, shaping it into an even stronger platform for networking and learning.

A PASSION FOR SERVICE

If there’s one theme that drives Justin’s approach, it’s customer service.

“Having a pleasant experience when calling with a question or signing up for membership is paramount,” he emphasizes. “Just like in any business, if members feel ignored, they won’t return. We want every interaction to be positive and professional.”

For Justin, impact means leaving members better off than before—whether that’s through insightful conference sessions, useful resources, or networking opportunities that open new doors.

“An impactful program is one you can apply both professionally and personally to improve your life,” he explains.

LOOKING AHEAD

Justin sees exciting opportunities for NSRA in the years ahead. He envisions expanding educational offerings beyond the annual conference, creating year-round touchpoints that keep members engaged.

“I want NSRA to be a true connector for the industry,” he says. “Not just an event host, but a partner in our members’ success.”

His dream? An association where every member feels seen, supported, and empowered—regardless of their company’s size or tenure in the industry.

BEYOND THE OFFICE

When he’s not working, Justin finds inspiration in his family life. With two young children at home, he says parenthood fuels his creativity and problem-solving skills.

“Kids look at the world without limits. They ask unexpected questions and imagine wild possibilities,” he reflects. “That perspective helps me think beyond processes and policies at work.”

And for those who like to know fun facts: Justin grew up playing chess competitively and served six years in the Army National Guard as a cannon crew member. Both experiences, in different ways, shaped his discipline and strategic mindset.

CONCLUSION

As Justin steps into his role, his vision is clear: strengthen member connections, deliver value through service, and grow the NSRA into a trusted resource and partner for the rent-to-own shed industry. With his focus on listening, learning, and leading with care, the association’s future looks both promising and people-centered.
