A Shed Wife Conversation with Erica Goodnight

Union Grove Lumber CEO and co-owner talks about legacy, family, and the ‘sawdust in her veins.’

In the heart of Harmony, North Carolina, Union Grove Lumber operates as more than just a family-owned lumber wholesale company. It’s a legacy, a mission, and a labor of love.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Erica Goodnight, the CEO and co-owner, to learn more about her journey and the driving force behind the company she proudly leads with her husband, Josh.

Shed Wife: Erica, you are very proud of Union Grove Lumber, and it seems to have such a rich history. Can you tell me about how it all began?

Erica Goodnight: Absolutely! Union Grove Lumber started with my dad 39 years ago. In fact, I was just a few days old when he launched the business. It’s been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Some people say I have “sawdust in my veins,” and I take that as a badge of honor.

Shed Wife: That’s such a great image—sawdust in your veins. What’s kept you passionate about this business over the years?

Erica: Honestly, it’s the relationships and the purpose behind what we do. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a legacy. I love connecting with people from all over the world and helping them build their dreams.
And it’s not just about supporting my family—it’s about supporting our employees’ families and the families of our customers. In the shed industry, we’re all like family, and that connection means everything to me.

Shed Wife: That sense of community really sets Union Grove Lumber apart. What’s the mission of your company?

Erica: Our mission is to supply high-quality wood products to shed builders throughout North America while staying true to our values of integrity, hard work, and family-centered service. We innovate, source, and distribute with the needs of our customers in mind, and that’s what makes us unique.

Shed Wife: Beyond the business, what does life look like for you?

Erica: Life is full and meaningful, that’s for sure. My husband, Josh, and I have two amazing boys, and they keep us busy. We spend a lot of time cheering them on at basketball and football games. We also love to travel as a family—it’s one of our favorite ways to make memories together.
And when I do get some downtime, you might find me reading a book by the ocean, attending concerts, or even planning our next adventure.

Shed Wife: It sounds like family and faith play a big role in your life.

Erica: Absolutely. Sunday mornings at church are a priority for us—it keeps us grounded. I also volunteer on the board of our local community college because I’m passionate about nurturing future business leaders in our area. For me, it’s all about building—building a business, building relationships, and building a legacy rooted in faith, family, and hard work.

Shed Wife: That’s such an inspiring perspective. What’s your favorite thing about working in the shed industry?

Erica: It’s the people. This industry is all I’ve ever known, and it feels like one big family. I love knowing that the work we do helps others build something tangible, something meaningful. Whether it’s a shed for storage or a tiny home for someone’s dream, we’re part of that journey, and it’s incredibly rewarding.

Shed Wife: Erica, your passion for this business and your values really shine through. What’s next for you and Union Grove Lumber?

Erica: We’re always looking to grow and innovate while staying true to our roots. For me, it’s about continuing to build something that lasts, something that reflects who we are and what we stand for.

Shed Wife: Thank you so much for sharing your story, Erica. It’s clear that Union Grove Lumber is more than just a business—it’s a family and a legacy.

Erica: Thank you! I’m grateful for the chance to share a little bit about what makes this journey so special.
