Rig of the Issue: 2018 Peterbilt 579 with WKM Trailer

I run a 2018 Peterbilt 579. It’s worlds more comfortable than a single axle and somehow still manages fuel mileage close to an F-450, which still surprises me.

We’ve done pickups, we’ve done single axles, and this truck flat-out outperforms them. It’s a better ride, and it handles better. Once you run one, it’s hard to go back.

For a trailer, I use a 38-to-48-foot WKM roller trailer. My dad bought it when we first started, and somewhere along the way, I ended up with it. I do miss my 30-to-40-footer some days, though.

On-site, I use a Cardinal 624T Mule. I started with a 5HD, then a 4, then moved up to a 524 and absolutely hated it. Tires are fine until they aren’t. In mud and snow and standing water, tracks win almost every single time. The 624T just does what I ask it to do.

My Hi-Lift Jack gets a lot of use—occasionally for things it probably shouldn’t be used for. And yes, I’ve learned the hard way that if you don’t control it on the way down, it will smack you in the head. (Several times; I don’t learn).

I most like the ease of hauling structures with my setup. Whether I’m in a city, a small town, or a beach town with small roads, the 579 handles little roads and city streets quite well. Also, my knees don’t hurt at the end of the day. I’ve had a few knee surgeries, and shifting just isn’t my thing anymore. (This truck is a 12-speed Eaton Automatic).

One thing I hate is ice. When the tracks spin, zigzagging usually helps break the hold and get the building sliding. It’s not always nice on the grass if it’s muddy, but it works.

Most of my customers say, “This isn’t your first rodeo, is it?”

I usually tell them, “I watched a few YouTube videos last night, and this is actually my first one.”

Just jokes, obviously. They also really like the setup and are amazed that sheds can be delivered so easily.
I’ve been hauling sheds for about six years now, and I’ve hauled through downtown Toronto on the 401 during rush hour, little beach roads, city streets, and out in the country. I love it.

My favorite deliveries are usually in town, because you get to actually think about how to get the shed into place. I really like the problem-solving aspect of this industry.
