Randy Johnson, owner of Randy Johnson Builders in Whitehall, Michigan, has been building sheds since 1989.
“I got into the shed building industry by accident,” he shares. “A trailer park customer hired me to assemble a shed for a customer. The park manager drove by and handed me a list of several more customers who needed a shed.”
Today, Johnson highlights what the company calls its “Cape Cod,” a 10 by 16 by 11 foot tall structure framed with 2 by 4s.
Johnson says they use basic tools, like a Skilsaw and a table saw, to create the structure.
“We pre-fabricate walls and trusses ahead of time, and then my helper and I assemble it on the customer’s site in about two days,” he shares.
“I think this design is unique because it has lofts, which almost doubles the usable space. I don’t know of anyone else, if any, who is doing lofts.
Johnson adds that half of his customers want Smart panel and half want vinyl siding, saying, “These are mostly used by customers who need a place for extra guests to sleep in at their ‘up north’ cabin.
“I’ve also had some of them use them as a ‘pop-up’ store.”
