While the trend of aspirational sheds continues to grow, many homeowners may be looking for an outdoor structure that fits their unique vision. Whether the goal is transforming a shed into a creative outlet, unique getaway, or dedicated work space, there are special factors to consider to ensure a successful build.
I recently spoke with Jason Bergeron, director of marketing for Heartland Sheds, to learn more about the process of making a shed into an aspirational space.
“While creativity powers the ‘awe’ factor behind reimagined sheds, the shed’s materials are ultimately what brings the vision to life successfully,” says Bergeron. “Like any build, selecting the right materials plays a major role in the quality of the end result.”
To help demonstrate the potential of sheds as aspirational outlets, Heartland Sheds recently teamed up with reality TV show Making It with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman. In the episode, four contestants were tasked with transforming a Heartland Shed featuring LP® Outdoor Building Solutions® products into a vacation getaway space.
With no limits set, contestants went to work building walls, installing windows, opening up roofing to create skylights and more. The final sheds represented four diverse themes—a 1960s Cuban house, nature retreat, hippie hideaway, and California bungalow.
During this episode, a few tips to building sheds as aspirational spaces appeared universal throughout.
LIGHTEN UP
Consider adding windows, a skylight, or opening up the space. Floor-to-ceiling windows create the perception of increased depth, resulting in a spacious feel, while adding statement doors can take the exterior appearance to the next level.
Specifically, Bergeron credits the durability, workability and versatility of LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding products that allowed contestants to add light to their unique visions.
MAXIMIZE SPACE
While sheds are generally a more compact space, taking advantage of not only the horizontal space but also the vertical space can make a monumental difference in both the functionality and appearance of your shed.
For example, the hippie hideaway featured on Making It was able to include both a functional bed and lounge area by incorporating a raised bunk-style bed and taking advantage of the space underneath for the lounge.
ESTABLISH A FOCAL POINT
First impressions are everything, and this applies to sheds as well. Determine the focal point of the shed and design the rest to complement it. This should be the “wow” factor and set the tone for the rest of the shed.
For example, the episode’s California bungalow featured extravagant sliding doors with a shibori-dyed fabric that was then reflected throughout in the floors and accent colors.
ADD CHARACTER WITH FINISHING TOUCHES
Shutters, a porch, or even simple decor go a long way by adding unique charm to the shed. Materials that would typically go to waste from cutting out windows or tearing down a wall can, for example, be repurposed to create shutters for a cost-efficient finishing touch.
While the contestants on Making It certainly made it look easy, Bergeron assures the process of building a shed to meet an aspirational vision can be a smooth process.
Above all, he recommends working with a durable product that is versatile enough to bring even the most creative ideas to life.
